Why Does The Garbage Disposal Smell?

December 23, 2009

Smelly Garbage Disposal

Is there a sewage smell coming from the kitchen sink or garbage disposal?  This sewage smell could be caused from a few things including: misuse of the garbage disposal, dishwasher drainage, improper plumbing drain piping, or a clogged plumbing drain line.

Causes Of Smell From The Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal can be misused by leaving food in the grinding chamber for long amounts of time which may cause a smell by the kitchen sink.  Also, in many cases the dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal which can lead to a smell from the kitchen sink as well.  Under the kitchen sink there may be improper plumbing drain piping.  Every sink needs a P-trap in order to stop any sewage smell from entering the house.  A kitchen sink without a p-trap may be causing the smell from the sink, not the garbage disposal.  Also, the plumbing drain pipes may be clogged causing the food to move down slowly.

Remedies For A Smelly Garbage Disposal

Are there any cures for a smelly kitchen sink or garbage disposal?  If the drains aren’t clogged and the piping is correct, then the smell may be just coming from the garbage disposal.  At Roger Vadnais Plumbing, we suggest lemon peels be ground up the disposal periodically in order to stop the smell.  If the plumbing drain piping is incorrect we will send a plumber out to any White Bear Lake or surrounding area to fix the problem.  A clogged drain will need to be cleaned with our roto rooter equipment.  Contact us at (651) 429-3303, visit our website at www.rogervadnais.com, or stop by the shop in White Bear Lake to schedule an appointment.
