What Causes Air To Come Out Of The Faucets?

February 22, 2010

Symptoms Of Air In Plumbing Pipes

Is there air coming out of the faucets or no water when the faucet is turned on?  Air can get into plumbing pipes for a variety of reasons and spurts of air/water can sometimes come shooting out of the faucet.  In some cases, there is no water coming from the faucets and only air is being fed by the plumbing pipes.

Causes Of Air In Plumbing Pipes

Situations can vary depending on if the water source is well water or city water.  If city water is the water supply, air can get into the plumbing pipes if the city performs service on the main water lines.  Also, if a house has the water shut-off or drained this will cause air to be in the plumbing lines as well.  If well water is the water supply and there is no water or just air coming from the faucets then there could be a problem with the well pipe, pump, or pressure tank.

In some cases the air can be purged from the plumbing pipes by running the faucets.  If there is an air problem on a well water system, a service technician will need to address the situation.  If problems persist contact Roger Vadnais Plumbing and Well Pump Service at (651) 429-3303 or visit us online at
